CACA Newsletter Issue 4
Editorial
With just a couple of meetings to go another track and field season is almost over. Cumbrias top athletes have had a particularly fine year and with some of the juniors also figuring well nationally the future looks bright. Congratulations to the coaches behind some great performances. Cumbria also had one of its most successful Northern Inter County Championships, in August at Gateshead, for many years.
Three of the top four have become exiles through university and college commitments and there is a debate to be had about how athletes living in Cumbria can reach national and international level given the many handicaps they face.
There is also a debate to had within the sport about the fact that most of the top athletes have chosen to represent clubs outside of the county in league competition. Our clubs and administrators need to face this fact squarely and fairly and to ask themselves why.
The progress made by our top quartet has been gratifying as the table below indicates
| Name | Event(s) | 2005 perf | 2006 perf | UK Rnking |
| Michael Coltherd | 800m | 1:48.97 | 1:46.34 | 6 |
| Lee Doran | Javelin | 67.25m | 72.04m | 8 |
| Keith Higham | Pole Vault | 5.40m | 5.47m (i) | 2 |
| Tim Ward | 200m 100m |
21.81 10.77 | 21.22 10.59 | 19 32 |
Tim Ward has made extraordinary progress at 200 metres, climbing from 71st in the UK rankings in 2005 to the top twenty in 2006 with an improvement of almost 6/10th of a second.
